There are a lot of myths about exercise and aging. Let’s bust a few of the most common ones—and share how real Vitality At Home patients proved them wrong.
Myth #1: I’m Too Old to Exercise
Fact: You’re never too old. Studies show that adults well into their 90s improve strength and mobility with the right exercise.
Real-Life Win: One of our patients, age 88, believed she was “too old to start.” After a personalized program of simple sit-to-stands and balance training, she was walking safely around her garden again within weeks. She now proudly tells her friends, “I’m stronger now than I was five years ago!”
Myth #2: Exercise Is Dangerous at My Age
Fact: The right exercise actually prevents falls and injuries by improving balance, strength, and coordination.
Real-Life Win: A gentleman in his mid-70s came to us after several falls. He feared exercise would cause another one. Through supervised PT, we built his leg strength and taught him safe balance strategies. Six months later, he’s walking confidently and hasn’t had a fall since.
Myth #3: Walking Is Enough
Fact: Walking is excellent, but it’s not the whole picture. Strength training and balance exercises are also essential to maintain independence.
Real-Life Win: A 72-year-old client loved her daily walks but struggled to carry groceries without pain. With added strength training—like seated rows and step-ups—she built the muscle power to manage household tasks without strain. Now she still walks daily but feels stronger than ever.
Myth #4: It’s Too Late to Start Now
Fact: Starting at any age improves your health, energy, and confidence. Every step you take toward activity makes a difference.
Real-Life Win: A man in his 80s came to us after years of inactivity. He thought it was “too late” to regain stamina. We started small with chair exercises and resistance bands. Within three months, he could climb the stairs to his grandson’s bedroom—something he thought he’d never do again.
Myth #5: Exercise Has to Hurt to Work
Fact: Pain is not required! Safe, gradual, and enjoyable exercise builds results without strain.
Real-Life Win: One of our patients avoided exercise after shoulder surgery because she thought it had to hurt to be effective. We showed her gentle, pain-free strengthening routines. Not only did her shoulder get stronger, but she learned that exercise can feel good—and now looks forward to her PT sessions each week.
