What Is the Difference Between Physical Therapy and Personal Training?

September 18, 2025

Many people wonder: should I see a physical therapist or a personal trainer? Both play important roles in staying healthy and active, but the services they provide—and the level of expertise—are different.

What a Personal Trainer Offers

Personal trainers are fitness professionals who help you reach general health and fitness goals. They design exercise programs, motivate you, and often work in gyms or community centers. While some have excellent knowledge of exercise techniques, they typically do not have medical training, and insurance does not cover their services.

What a Physical Therapist Provides

Physical therapists are licensed medical providers. At Vitality At Home, we hold doctoral-level training and, in my case, geriatric clinical specialist certification. PTs:

  • Evaluate medical conditions, pain, or injuries that may limit your activity.
  •  Provide medically necessary treatment covered under Medicare Part B.
  • Address chronic health concerns like arthritis, balance problems, or post-surgical recovery.
  • Design safe, personalized programs that adapt as your health changes.

How PT and Personal Training Can Work Together

Often, physical therapy and personal training complement each other. A PT helps you recover from injury, rebuild strength, and improve balance. Once you’re ready for general fitness, a trainer may help you keep progressing in a safe environment.

At Vitality At Home, we make this transition seamless because we also have two certified personal trainers on staff who come directly to your home. They provide one-on-one personal training services tailored to your goals, helping you continue building fitness once you’ve completed or progressed in therapy.

Why This Matters for Adults 55+

As we age, safety and medical expertise become critical. A personal trainer may not recognize when an exercise is unsafe for your joints or heart. A PT can identify these issues and adjust your program accordingly, keeping you safe and maximizing results.

If you’re unsure where to start, let us help. Vitality At Home provides concierge physical therapy services in the comfort and convenience of your living room, covered by Medicare Part B. Together, we’ll create a safe, effective path toward lifelong strength and independence
